The New School is a private research university in New York City. It was founded in 1919 as The New School for Social Research with an original mission dedicated to academic freedom and intellectual inquiry and a home for progressive thinkers. Since then, the school has grown to house five divisions within the university. These include the Parsons School of Design, the Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, the College of Performing Arts, The New School for Social Research, and the Schools of Public Engagement.
The New School's Mannes School of Music in New York City is a distinguished conservatory within the College of Performing Arts. It provides rigorous classical music training while fostering innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration with the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music and the School of Drama. Mannes aims to cultivate "citizen artists" prepared to engage with the world through their music. Students benefit from world-class faculty, exceptional performance opportunities in a major cultural hub, and access to the broader resources of The New School, preparing them for diverse careers in the 21st-century music landscape. This approach balances deep artistic tradition with forward-thinking engagement.
