Jeff South
Dr. Jeff South investigates emerging trends in journalism, focusing on the integration of social media and innovative news writing techniques. As an Associate Professor Emeritus and Affiliate Faculty Member at Virginia Commonwealth University's Robertson School of Media and Culture, he has significantly contributed to the field of journalism education. With a robust background as a newspaper editor and reporter, Dr. South brought his real-world experience into the classroom when he joined VCU in 1997. Throughout his tenure at VCU, Dr. South directed the Capital News Service program, a pivotal initiative that provided undergraduate students with hands-on experience in journalism and state government coverage. His leadership in this program not only enhanced students' understanding of the media landscape but also prepared them for successful careers in journalism. Dr. South's expertise extends to computer-assisted reporting, a field in which he has been a pioneer. He has taught a variety of courses, including news writing, social media, and copy editing, equipping students with the skills necessary to navigate the rapidly evolving media environment. His innovative teaching methods and dedication to student success have left a lasting impact on the Robertson School of Media and Culture. After 23 years of dedicated service, Dr. South retired in 2020, leaving behind a legacy of journalistic excellence and a commitment to education. His contributions to the field continue to influence both current and future generations of journalists. Dr. South remains an active voice in journalism, often engaging in discussions about the future of media and the role of technology in news reporting.
