Kwaku Nantwi
Dr. Kwaku Nantwi is an esteemed Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences at Wayne State University School of Medicine. With a profound dedication to advancing medical science, his research is primarily centered on restoring respiratory motor function following diaphragm paralysis due to spinal cord injury. His innovative work involves pharmacologic manipulations that activate the "Crossed Phrenic Pathway," a promising approach in the field of neurorehabilitation. Dr. Nantwi's research delves into the intricate molecular signaling pathways that underpin drug-induced recovery, aiming to uncover the mechanisms that sustain these therapeutic effects. His exploration includes the use of theophylline, lithium, and infrared light as potential interventions to enhance respiratory function, offering hope for improved quality of life for individuals affected by spinal cord injuries. In addition to his groundbreaking research, Dr. Nantwi is deeply committed to education. He imparts his knowledge to students by teaching Medical Histology and holds the position of Course Director for Graduate Medical Histology. Furthermore, he serves as the Director for Post Baccalaureate Histology, where he plays a pivotal role in shaping the educational experiences of aspiring medical professionals. Dr. Nantwi's academic journey is marked by his attainment of a PhD in Pharmacology, a testament to his expertise and dedication to the field. His contributions to research have been recognized through various fellowships and awards, underscoring his impact and influence in the scientific community.
