John E. Casida

John E. Casida, Professor Emeritus of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management and of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology at the University of California, Berkeley, was a renowned toxicologist and pesticide expert. As the founder of the campus's Environmental Chemistry and Toxicology Laboratory, Casida's research spanned over 70 years, where he discovered how pesticides affect insects, animals, and the environment. His contributions to pesticide biochemistry and toxicology helped develop safer and more selective compounds, earning him the Wolf Prize in Agriculture in 1993. Casida trained over 230 scientists and was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society. He received numerous awards for his work and is remembered as an inspiration to students and colleagues.
