Dr. W. James Wood is advancing the conversation in theater arts as the Artistic Director of Theatre at South Dakota State University. With a robust academic background, Dr. Wood holds an MFA in Directing from Minnesota State University-Mankato and a BFA from the University of South Dakota. His comprehensive expertise spans across various facets of theater, including acting, directing, designing, management, and playwriting, making him a versatile figure in the field. Dr. Wood's research interests lie in arts management and theater, with a particular focus on stage combat, dialects, and management. His dedication to these areas is evident in his work both on and off the stage, where he continually seeks to innovate and inspire through his creative endeavors. His leadership extends beyond the university as he has served as the Immediate Past Region 5 Chair of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. Currently, he contributes to the KCACTF National Committee as a Member-at-Large, where he plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of theater education and practice. Throughout his career, Dr. Wood has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to the arts. In 2023, he was honored with the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences Outstanding Creative Activity award, a testament to his exceptional work in the creative field. Additionally, his commitment to community service was acknowledged with the 2021 F.O. Butler Award for Excellence in Community Service, highlighting his dedication to using theater as a tool for community engagement and development. Dr. Wood's passion for theater is matched by his commitment to education and mentorship.
