Kurt Schick

Dr. Kurt Schick is committed to innovative research in writing and rhetoric, serving as a Professor and Director of First-Year Writing at James Madison University. Since joining the faculty in 2001, he has dedicated himself to advancing the field of writing studies through both his teaching and scholarly work. Dr. Schick earned his Ph.D. in English from Texas Christian University, an M.A. in Teaching from Mary Baldwin College, and a B.A. in Middle East Studies from the University of Virginia, reflecting a diverse and interdisciplinary academic background. His research interests are deeply rooted in the exploration of writing centers, argumentation, rhetoric, and the pedagogy of teaching writing, with a particular focus on first-year writing programs. Dr. Schick is passionate about developing effective strategies to enhance students' writing skills, believing that strong writing is foundational to academic success and critical thinking. Dr. Schick has made significant contributions to the field through his numerous publications. He is the author and co-author of influential works such as "So What? The Writer's Argument" and "A Guide to Composition Pedagogies."
