Jeff Schauer
Jeff Schauer is an Associate Professor in the History Department at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He earned his PhD in History from the University of California, Berkeley, and completed his undergraduate studies with a BA in Anthropology and History from the University of California, Irvine. Schauer's academic pursuits are deeply rooted in the historical dynamics of colonialism, decolonization, and nationhood, particularly within the contexts of eastern and southern Africa. His research delves into the intricate relationships between environmental politics and the socio-political landscapes of these regions. Schauer has contributed to the academic community through publications in esteemed journals such as the African Studies Review and the Journal of British Studies. His book, "Wildlife between Empire and Nation in Twentieth-Century Africa," provides a nuanced exploration of wildlife conservation during the periods of colonial rule, decolonization, and the nascent stages of nationhood in Africa. Currently, Schauer is engaged in several research projects that further his exploration of historical and environmental themes. One of his key projects investigates conservation as a tool for state-building in Northern Rhodesia and Zambia. Additionally, he is examining Britain's post-independence entanglements in eastern and central Africa, shedding light on the lingering impacts of colonialism in these regions. Another significant aspect of Schauer's research focuses on Kenya's strategies in addressing the repercussions of settler colonialism in southern Africa during the 1960s. Through his work, Schauer aims to unravel the complexities of historical narratives and their implications for contemporary environmental and political issues. His scholarly contributions continue to enrich the understanding of Africa's colonial and post-colonial history, offering insights into the ongoing challenges and transformations within these societies.
