Jeff Tessem
Inspiring change in the area of metabolic health, Jeff Tessem serves as an Associate Professor in the Nutrition, Dietetics & Food Science department at Brigham Young University. With a robust academic background, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Microbiology from Brigham Young University, followed by a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Further honing his expertise, he completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Beta Cell Biology at Duke University Medical Center. Professor Tessem's research is deeply rooted in understanding the intricate molecular pathways that govern beta-cell biology. His work primarily focuses on mechanisms that increase beta-cell proliferation, enhance glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, and offer protection against beta-cell death. These areas are crucial for advancing knowledge in diabetes treatment and prevention, making his contributions significant to the field of metabolic diseases. In addition to his research endeavors, Professor Tessem is passionate about teaching. He is dedicated to educating students on nutrient metabolism, biochemistry, and cellular function, aiming to inspire the next generation of scientists and healthcare professionals. His teaching philosophy emphasizes the integration of theoretical knowledge with practical applications, preparing students to tackle real-world challenges in nutrition and health sciences. Professor Tessem's commitment to research and education is reflected in his numerous publications and presentations at national and international conferences. His work not only contributes to the academic community but also has the potential to impact public health policies and practices related to diabetes and metabolic disorders. Outside of his professional commitments, he is actively involved in mentoring students and young researchers, fostering an environment of curiosity and innovation. His dedication to both his field and his students makes him a valued member of the Brigham Young University faculty, continually inspiring change and progress in the realm of food science and nutrition.
