Jinah Kim

Jinah Kim's approach blends rigorous analysis with practical applications in the study of Indian and South Asian Art. As a professor at the Department of History of Art & Architecture at Harvard University, she delves into the intricate relationships between text and image, exploring how these elements interact within the broader cultural and historical contexts of South Asia. Her research interests extend to female representations and patronage, examining how women have influenced and been depicted in art throughout history. Kim's scholarly contributions include her first book, "Receptacle of the Sacred," which provides an in-depth investigation into the relationship between illustrated manuscripts and the Buddhist book cult in South Asia. This work highlights the significance of these manuscripts as both religious and artistic objects, offering new insights into their role within Buddhist practices. Her second book, "Garland of Visions," further expands on her research by exploring the transformation of Indian painting into a portable medium through "pothi" manuscripts.
